A Burr Ridge, Illinois law firm focusing on real estate law, Codilis and Associates empowers its employees to volunteer with and support local and statewide nonprofits. One collaboration Codilis & Associates undertook was the Illinois State Bar Association’s (ISBA’s) Lawyers Feeding Illinois Project, alongside the overarching organization Feeding Illinois.
Begun in January 2013, ISBA’s 2012-3 president, John E. Thies, created the Lawyers Feeding Illinois program to raise funds to pay for meals distributed at eight local food banks and many more soup kitchens and food pantries. ISBA’s component law firms and individual lawyers formed teams, competing over who could raise the most money. The 14-day fund drive, which was held from February 18 to March 1, aimed to raise 1 million meals, and concluded the fundraising effort on March 13. In all, the over 2,000 individual lawyers and lawyer teams raised enough money to pay for over 4.6 million meals. In April 2013, ISBA recognized local law firms, bar associations, and related institutions for monetary donations and the amount of food donated by weight. The Attorneys’ Title Guaranty Fund (ATGF), Inc., in Champaign, raised the most money, $25,395. Peoria’s Heyl, Royster, Voelker and Allen, P.C., donated the most food, a total of 2,547 pounds.
