An Illinois law firm focused on real estate matters, Codilis and Associates supports charities in and around Chicago. One organization that Codilis & Associates donates to is the Cara Collective.
Tom Owens, a local entrepreneur, founded Cara in 1991, sharing his job-interviewing advice with low-income residents, even holding mock interviews in his car. To expand on his work, the Cara Collective provides job training and placement for Chicago residents who might “fall through the cracks” otherwise. The organization acknowledges the transferrable skills their clients already have, especially those learned outside formal education, and helps them find work and obtain permanent housing resulting from their increased income. The Cara Collective operates multiple programs for both clients motivated to find work, and businesses needing temporary employees. Cara Connect is the group’s primary job-training program. The staff continue to support clients even after they begin their new roles. Cleanslate, for example, is a suite of litter abatement, recyclable sorting, landscaping, and even snow-removal services, staffed by Cara Collective clients and available to local small businesses or event organizers.
